After game-flow controls, 52 audited FBS-FCS openers average less than 0.1 points from zero.

FBS–FCS and Reclassification Uncertainty
Do FBS-FCS openers or first-year FBS programs need a separate directional Factor beyond lopsided game flow?
Do not add an FBS-FCS or reclassification point estimate. Preserve wider uncertainty as supporting context and continue collecting first-year-program cases.
- Historical seasons
- 2022–25
- Primary sample
- 185 chronological openers
What the evidence says
Thirteen paired games do not show a stable additional movement pattern.
The clearer result is wider uncertainty, not a reliable side to take.
Use classification as context and keep collecting first-year FBS cases; only two are currently available.
2026 prospective implementation
FBS-FCS and first-year-FBS classifications can be identified from the existing schedule/team data; no separate directional card is approved.
Current inputs
- Opponent classification
- Reclassification history
- Independent OV Line
- Game-flow context
- Additional source need
- No new source is required for current classifications.
- Refresh cadence
- Preseason and after classification corrections.
- Coverage and limitations
- The supported distinction is wider uncertainty, not a stable point direction.
Study results
| Test | Games | Result | Validation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening residual after game flow | 52 FBS-FCS | -0.08 points | Interval -1.39 to +1.25 |
| Kickoff residual after game flow | 32 FBS-FCS | -0.16 points | Interval -1.91 to +1.50 |
| Opening-to-kickoff residual | 13 FBS-FCS | -0.15 points | Interval -1.24 to +1.04 |
| Actual vs OV after game flow | 109 FBS-FCS | -0.23 points | Interval -3.01 to +2.69 |
| First-year FBS | 2 cases | No supportable coefficient | Collection priority |
What we tested
The remaining signed effect changed by season and was already absorbed by game-flow modeling. FBS-FCS results were more dispersed, while reclassification coverage was too thin for a coefficient.
- FBS-FBS and FBS-FCS opener type
- Independent line and existing game-flow estimate
- Prior FCS strength
- First-year FBS classification history
Leakage and validation safeguards
- Game-flow effect removed before testing an additional direction
- Season-specific residual direction reported
- Dispersion evaluated separately from signed mean
- No coefficient inferred from incomplete reclassification coverage
What we learned
- Opponent classification changes uncertainty more clearly than direction.
- A second FBS-FCS point card would double-count the existing game-flow signal.
- Prior FCS strength did not create a launchable subtype.
What this does not prove
- FCS team-strength histories are less complete than FBS histories.
- First-year FBS programs are rare and heterogeneous.
How uses this finding
No points are displayed or summed. The broader result range may be explained within the game-flow study, and reclassification cases remain tagged for prospective collection.
Historical data record
Revalidated August 31 under market-line contract 2026-08-31.2. The audit covers 109 FBS-FCS and 76 FBS-FBS chronological openers, with 52 FBS-FCS established-opening cases, 32 kickoff-observed cases, and 13 paired movement cases.
