A team performs worse than the spread after winning by 21 or more.

Contradictory evidenceThe market moved reliably opposite the familiar claim between the established opener and the kickoff-adjacent observation.Updated September 9, 2026
Decision

Publish the opposite in-week market finding transparently and apply no adjustment. A familiar narrative is not evidence that the market should move in that direction.

2026 prospective implementation

Live detection

Automatically identifies qualifying 2026 matchups with the frozen pregame rule and links the condition to this individual Ledger record.

Current inputs

  • Existing schedule and team ratings
  • Existing market consensus
  • Earlier completed-game results when the rule requires history
Additional source need
No new provider. Detection uses existing OnVarsity data and production feeds.
Refresh cadence
Recomputed when the existing schedule, market-line, ratings, or completed-game feeds refresh.
Coverage and limitations
The condition is reviewed context only. It contributes zero points and appears only when the required pregame information is available.

Study results

Positive estimates point in the claim's stated direction; negative estimates point against it. These are three separate questions—not three versions of one score.

What we tested

We translated “Letdown after a blowout win” into a fixed pregame condition and evaluated separate opening, opening-to-kickoff, kickoff, OV, and actual-result outcomes.

  • FBS-FBS games with the available audited market states, final score, and focal-game-excluded OV Line
  • Pregame condition flags built only from information available before the evaluated game
  • Complete prior-game histories spanning 5,933 games

Leakage and validation safeguards

  • Rolling form, streak, opponent, and rivalry features use only earlier completed games
  • Season-week block resampling preserves shared game and calendar dependence
  • Benjamini-Hochberg q-values control false discoveries across all 27 hypotheses for each outcome
  • The OV Line excludes the focal game's market consensus line
  • Market-defined eligibility uses the established opener, and movement uses only paired opening and kickoff observations

What we learned

  • Opening market relative to the OV Line averaged 0.86 points opposite the claim and survived the screen-wide correction in the opposite direction.
  • Kickoff-adjacent market relative to the OV Line averaged 1.22 points opposite the claim and survived the screen-wide correction in the opposite direction.
  • Opening-to-kickoff movement averaged 0.35 points opposite the claim and survived the screen-wide correction in the opposite direction.
  • Actual margin relative to the opening market averaged 0.93 points opposite the claim and did not establish a reliable direction after screen-wide correction.
  • Actual margin relative to the kickoff-adjacent market averaged 0.58 points opposite the claim and did not establish a reliable direction after screen-wide correction.
  • Actual margin relative to the OV Line averaged 1.72 points opposite the claim and survived the screen-wide correction in the opposite direction.
  • The claim-side cover rate was 50.1%; this is descriptive, not a betting recommendation.

What this does not prove

  • This is one hypothesis record from a shared 27-claim exploratory screen, not a dedicated preregistered confirmation study.
  • Eight seasons may still conceal regime changes, conference changes, or small effects.
  • The data show association, not motivation, psychology, coaching intent, or a causal mechanism.
  • Opening and kickoff coverage varies by season. Missing market states are not imputed, and CFBD final-recorded observations are retained separately.

How uses this finding

Zero points. When relevant, disclose that the historical in-week market association ran opposite the conventional story.
